What kind of gift should I give my Host Family?

I'm going to buy a gift for my host family, but I don't know what to get! They are young, she's 29 and he's 38. They have a little boy who's 1. They live in Germany and I live in the US. I was thinking of getting them a gift from a local store here that sells stuff that is made in our state. What should I get? I don't want to buy something completely useless and stupid. Thanks!

Absolutely best thing you can do! There is no thing you can buy at a reasonably chepaer price in the US than in Germany, and people are curious by nature, so give them something that is unique to your state, and nothing else.

When I went to Germany with my choir from school we also got gifts for our host family. We made a basket of goodies that you would find here. Some candies. (we did goo goo clusters from TN, since that is where we were from) and a hat a t shirt, a magnet, and a Christmas ornament from the Chattanooga choo choo. Whatever you give them make sure it is something that they can't get there. Some American items can be found over there. Our host family loved having stuff from America.

Something unique from your state sounds very good. It doesn't have to be expensive or even useful, but avoid tackiness.
As a parting gift, something personal like a framed photograph of you and your family would probably be a good idea.

Get something you can only buy in the US, or is really expensive there and not in the US. They'll appreciate it, and it's something different.
