Laws vary Country to country and you are best to contact the embassy of each Nation you have interest in and you can get all the information there that you would need for school, working, and living abroad in their nation.
That is your best option, each one has a website as well I am sure if you Google the nation's embassy you can find each one!
Good luck. |

It doesn't matter what kind of work you get, you are free to choose. But you are not allowed to work full-time on a student visa. You will only be able to work around 10 or 20 hours a week. It will not be enough to support yourself while you are studying. Your main source of income has to be your savings. Some people go abroad for their sophomore year, using student loans to finance their studies.
For more info on studying in Germany check out www.daad.de.
There are scholarship programs for students who have completed their bachelor degree and intend to do their masters in Germany.
Paperwork an exchange year in Germany would not be too difficult for a US citizen, the biggest problem most people have is how to finance it. Still it takes roughly 6 months of planning everything and getting the paperwork in order. You first need to look for a university offering the classes you want, then apply and go through the process of getting a student visa. US citizens can apply for a German student visa while they are already in Germany.
For studying abroad in Italy, check out the website of the Italian embassy in Washington DC.
You should also use the search function above to look for already answered questions about studying in Germany, Italy or Spain and universities in Berlin, Florence, etc. |

Not sure if the Schengen Agreement applies. Basically it state that you will have to work "under the table" as a bartender or a waiter unless you have some pretty good pull. |

Work visas are harder to get than tourist visas of course, but you should be using student visas for the most part (which should be arranged for you by your university/program). In Germany at least, I believe you can get student jobs with a student visa. |
