What language did East Prussians speak? |
From my understanding, the Prussian language became extinct by the early 18th century.
What language did East Prussians mostly speak in the late 19th century and early 20th century in an area of Königsberg(modern-day Kaliningrad Oblast)?
Was it German, Lithuanian, Polish or Russian?

Well, your question is interesting, because in the late 19th century, there were more Polish speakers in Prussia then German ones. However, Koenigsberg was mostly German speaking, but the area surrounding it was mostly Polish speaking. There were also a few Lithuanian speakers, but quite small really. In the 20th century however, German was near universal as a first language in Koenigsberg for residents. Russian only started taking hold after World War 2, and today, Lithuanian is all but gone from the city. Some German is still spoken in very small communities today. |

I grew up around some old east prussian family. But in west germany of course. After WW 2 almost all german nationals had to leave the area. unfortunately I must tell you that the tolerance agaist polish or other east european nationals was clearly "0". I really don't belief that the east prussians would have accepted a large group to speak polish in their country. This was the fact in the old world. fortunately everything changed sice then. Europe today is very liberal and open. But if you would like to know about the way the old east prussians used to speak then check out "Jiddisch" this dialect is very close to the wide east Prussian dialect. |
