Dresden, Germany is extremely interesting. The Frauenkirche, which was built around 1725-1732, was destroyed by Allied Forces in 1945 and was left basically untouched as a pile of rubble. In 1996 reconstruction was started and opened October 30, 2005 for its first Mass. You can even take a tour up to the observation deck (which I did!). Google "Frauenkirche Dresden" for pics.
There are several cities within easy driving distance, like Meissen, Berlin, Pottsdam to name a few. |

You can go to the Heidelberg Castle, that's really nice and they have tours in english. Also, if you travel along the Rhine, you stumble over castles left and right if you're not careful. And most have tours in english, or they sell brochures in english.
Also, near Heidelberg there is a small town called Ladenburg, that's about 2500 years old and you can see artifacts all over the city. The town center is ancient, with cobblestones and old houses that look like they came from the Harry Potter movies. Ladenburg is also the town where Mr. Daimler and Mr. Benz had their little brainstorm session and came up with the Mercedes Benz (Mercedes was Mr. Daimler's daughters name). The place is now a museum.
Germany is so old, every city or town has ancient buildings, there are castles everywhere, and it's really nice in summer. And yes, check out the camps, too - I've been to Dachau (near Munich) and that's an eye-opener for sure.
Enjoy! |

For ancient buildings you will probably need to go to Italy or the South of France, but Neuschwanstein, Herrenchimsee and Linderhof are all castles in Bavaria built by Ludwig II |

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
It houses the Pergamon Altar and Ishtar Gate, two of the most important ancient archeological finds in the world.

You have to see the cathedral in Cologne. It was the tallest building in the world before the empire state building was built. Right next to the cathedral is an art museum built on top of an ancient roman mosaic floor. Trier has a lot of ancient roman ruins. Castles are a dime a dozen along the Rhine river. My suggestion, take a river boat trip (really not that expensive). |
