I live in Bavaria, and I can't complain about my income and working options. The former eastern states of Thuringia, Saxonia and Saxonia-Anhalt (in German: Thüringen, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt) also have a thriving economy. It's not bad doing business with them.
There has been, and probably will remain, what we call the "Nord-Süd-Gefälle" (roughly translated: the north-south-gap). Northern states have always been at a disadvantage, economically speaking, and that hasn't changed since reunification. We're still better off in the South.
So I advise you to redraw your line. Turn it by 90 degrees to split Germany into south and north instead of east and west.
And once you're here, I'll be glad to explain to you what the white sausage equator ("Weißwurstäquator") is.

It's a bit like it. But remember, German reunification was 18 years ago. Somehow we handled it without causing the 3rd world war. That was the most astonishing thing to me: The way eastern authorities were simply overwhelmed by the mass of people wanting to be reunified. They just didn't have the time to call in the tanks. That was civil disobedience at its best.
But you really have to redraw your lines. The former East has caught up with its neighbors, and nowadays, geography and natural resources play a major role in economy. We're not living in a NATO vs. Warsaw Pact situation anymore. What counts now are natural and human resources; and geography has a vital role in that business. The southern states have and use them, and as to Bavaria: We have a conservative government, influenced by the Greens. That's environmentalism with an aspect to business, and that's fine with me. |

Please let me (as a Northern Germany resident) add that your chances in job and business also depend somewhat on the kind of your profession. Alwin is right that in general, the southern states have advantages in most businesses, but Northern Germany also has its strengths, for example the transportation sector or the aircraft and spacecraft construction in Hamburg and Bremen, or the renewable energy sector at several sites in the North.
On the other hand, costs of living in the North are somewhat lower than in the South (in average), so that you even might get more out of your working hour in the North even though wages might be lower.
((Just wanted to say that we're not that backwards ... :) |

Answering you once again Alwin beat me to the punch and gave you a great answer.
He is correct, from what I can see the East esp in Thuringia has really exploded in income. |
