When I was an exchange student many, many moons ago... I brought stuff that my american family never seen. Like cookbook of their mom favorite recipe, their family favorite recipe, and a travel book. Something with a bit of culture, and a bit about their family. Worth more than any souvenirs...

Chocolates from Germany (ymmm!) and other countries.
Very special, easy to obtain & travel with, not too costly.

That depends a lot on what you're interested in, and what region of Germany she's from might have a lot to do with it, too.

When I went on an exchange trip last year, my host family lived near Stuttgart. Because of the stuff about the polar bear cub that had been born at the Stuttgart zoo, she brought me a plush polar bear from a popular German toymaker. Again, just regional stuff. Food probably isn't a good idea because of customs, but if it's pre-packaged it can work--but that defeats some of what is so great about German foods.

You may just want to ask her for something that she feels is special to her region of Germany, and let her decide what that may be. You may find that you end up with something much more interesting, and something that you would never have thought of on your own.

Have fun! Exchange trips are amazing, and you'll learn a lot while she's with you.

Depends upon your age and interests. Germany has great Christmas markets and vendors of handmade Christmas ornaments, nutcrackers and figurines. Not to mention the Black Forest cuckoo clocks, but they may be too expensive for student to purchase. Also, they have great wine and are the originators of the Riesling varietal. Some of the candies are unique also -- they have several kinds of sweets which you can't find here in the US (marzipan - very pretty sweets).

Haribos - Gummibärchen, chocolates, Leibnitz Schokokekse:

Also ask her to bring a bottle of locally made Schnapps and an interesting book/coffee table book about where she lives. You did not say exactly which part of Germany she is from, so can't really be of much help as far as local specialities are concerned.

Aww that's so sweet of her, but remember to get her a gift to remember America too <3

Just ask her for something to remember her by.

So...you're in it for the gifts?

IDK if this is weird but arent they known for sausages? Maybe some other kind of meat. If that is too weird try chocolate, and if not food then something cool from their traditions.
