What should we do when we travel to Germany next summer?

My husband and I are taking our two teenagers (16 and 19 years old) to Germany next summer for 4 weeks. We are not limited to just Germany. I just don't know what to do.
Additional Details
Where should we go? What do you recommend we see?

1st consider going by train. It'll be probably a new experience, lots of fun and not that expensive. (railpass.com/raileurope.com) All major cities as well as smaller tourist towns can be reached without problem. You may even rent bikes there, which makes it more fun. Besides the well known cities, the Baltic Sea, the lake Constance (GEM!) Rhine and Mosel River are all beautiful. My favourite town: Wuerzburg. Avoid Neuschwanstein and Hofbraeuhaus and all you already heard of, since they're crowded and you know them from pictures anyway. An alternative to the Black Forest are the Harz Mountains (www.hsb-wr.de.) Germans usually speak English so communication is the best way to to get to know us.

Well Germany is a great start. (when I write a vowel followed by an e it means the letter before it has umlauts)
Go to Dresden. Go to the Altstadt (old City) and tour the churches and buildings and the Zwinger. The Gruenes Gewoelbe is a great museum with precious relics of former kings and royalty better than the crown jewels in London! (in Dresden you get to get real close and look at them instead of behind a rope.) Plus there is a walnut with 100 lifelike faces carved into it! Come to think of it it may be a cherry pit!)
Get fit and make a day trip to Radebeul (30 minutes from Dresden) and hike up through the vineyards to the Spitzhaus (it's a fun climb with hundreds of stairs, so fun to reach the top, and the view so great it's rewarding!) Then go have dinner some blocks from the bottom of the hill at the Losschnitzel haus. If you can afford it stay at the Steigenberger ParkHotel!! Nicest hotel! Take a day to go to the Sachsische Schweiz (40 minutes from Dresden) and see the Festung Königstein fortress! The climbing is fun and the views are like no other!
There are some things you can't miss in the rest of Germany. Berlin you have to see for it's history alone! Don't miss the Brandenburg Gate!
See Salzburg especially if you like Sound of Music! Neuschwanstein castle in Bavaria (which is the model for America's well known Disney castle) is a must see. If hiking mountains if fun I recommend the area of Berchtesgaden in Bavaria.

I am originally from the UK, but I have traveled a lot and I have lived in many different cities in Germany. I left Germany a couple of years ago now but I am excited for you and your family that you will be spending 4 weeks there next summer! I have so many memories from Germany, in the north and south. The cities and the culture and the people have a lot to offer.. Germany is a big place...so it depends where you will be exactly... but when I was there I first took a German language course. I booked with www.thelanguagetravelcompany.com and they have different destinations to choose from. This would be such a great chance for your teenagers as then they will immediately meet other students their age and possibly friends for life! And the courses are for anyone, for all ages and for beginners too, so perhaps you all want to join a course. These courses combine a modern teaching of the German language with lots of activities and a full activities program of visits and excursions and so you will have to do no planning whatsoever! You will see the sights, meet the people, learn some basic German and it will no doubt be a wonderful summer. HAMBURG is my favorite city! You should start there!
