There's quite a lot to do in and around Frankfurt (good shopping, loads of good night clubs...make sure to go to Cocoon Club in Frankfurt! It's very high-tech and cool) and after a half hour drive you can be up on the Feldberg, a little mountain, where you can go hiking and see nature and have a fantastic view over Hessen. For shopping you should go to the Zeil in Frankfurt (big shopping street). There's lots of stores and a big mall called the Zeil-Galerie. Make sure to look at the river Main as well, especially in summer it's quite nice strolling along and having a drink by it.

A great city to explore is Hamburg, which is up in the North. Very different to Frankfurt, but definitely worth checking out. It's by the sea, so there's nice harbours and good sea food. It depends how much time you have, but Munich and Berlin are also great cities...they are in completely opposite directions unfortunately, so you need some time to explore all of them. All are quite different and have different highlights. For some nature there are a lot of places in Germany...it's probably advisable to go South for that and do some hiking in the mountains in Bavaria for example.

Anyway, enjoy your trip.

If you are into city-life, go to Berlin, Frankfurt. They have the best clubs. Like Castles? Then it's the southern part of Germany near black forest, Tuttlingen, also visit Trier (near Luxembourg). There are some really cool buildings and churches there. I am guessing you'll be living in Darmstadt. It has an old half-broken castle on top of a hill (near Eberstadt) named Frankestein. There's a restaurant with a fabulous view.

Check around Lower Saxony! This is where the Grimm brothers collected their stories, and it's a beautiful section of country (especially the Luneburg Heath). Also, I hear Hannover is a nice city to visit.
