There is sooo much sight-seeing to do in Berlin. We took a bus tour which was like a 6km loop around and through the city then afterwards, we walked the whole tour route, stopping at so many shops, cafes etc. There was a trendy upmarket internet cafe (felt like a nightclub!) where you can stop and email all your friends, theres also alot of cafes, gift shops and... McDonalds! Recommend McDonalds.. I go to Maccas in every country I have been to - and thats quite a few! Theres also some nice historic/cultural and religious sites. What I loved was on the main road through Berlin, they had an outdoor beer garden where you sit at tables on the side of the street and have a few drinks. If you're with the kiddies, watch out when walking along the main strip, if you see a large park surrounded by tall trees and bushes.. watch out for gaps in the foilage as the nudists in the park are HIGHLY visible and love to flaunt it... I was very surprised! |

I have never been to this tropical island but I know the building is huge (they wanted to built the worlds largest Zeppelin in there in 2000 or so) and they spent lots of money to set it up. The homepages looks like it is really good and it seems easy enough to get there.
You can find more information on different museums and stuff at this web site: http://www.berlin.de/english/
And for ten days I would definitely include Potsdam in the trip which has a beautiful castle and other things to see.

The DDR Museum should be fun for your kids, the Zoo is also a good tip. You can also try ping pong in some of the parks scattered around the city. |

What your kids most probably will like is the TV broadcasting tower at Alexanderplatz, kindly named by the Berliners the "Telespargel" ("TV asparagus") because of its slim line, and once you queued up and got a ticket for the elevator (not really cheap), you feel like skyrocketing. Don't miss the way down, there's about half a second of zero G. It's fascinating.
There are some fast food restaurants in Berlin probably unknown to Americans or British. We have McD, KFC, and Pizza Hut all the same; but try a Nordsee restaurant. If you knew a Hamburger, a "Bremer" will be just fine. It's what they call a "Fishburger" at McD's, but with more fish and bread.
I don't know what the weather will be like when your kids come to Berlin; I'd recommend a visit to Checkpoint Charlie anyway, and go to the Potsdamer Platz. There's a 3D cinema that's really worth a visit. There are afternoon shows for kids at reasonable prices. They should see the 3D dome.
I hope the kids don't have weight problems, as in Berlin, you can easily gain some weight by trying Turkish Döner, Arabian Falafel, Thai fried chicken with peanut butter sauce, and Indian chicken masala, all in one day. I lived there for seven years and gained a kilo a year. |
