What type of video games are in Germany?

I'm going to Germany this Spring, and I was wondering if they played things like Guitar Hero or Donkey Kong over there, and if they do is it as popular as it is in America?

Also, are German TV's and American TV's insanley differnet? Thanks!

I can promise you, people here play the same things, like the same music and TV serials like in the US. Especially Guitar Hero (on the Wii, I think) is a fav, and fantasy games and WoW, and, yes, the whole GTA series. We played video games here since Atari sold the first ones to us. KIds play them on their mobiles or iPhones. (Did you know that Germany has more mobile phones per capita than the US?)

As to TV, I think the amount of commercials on private TV stations is insane in both Europe and America, although you might find Europe as a relief. In Germany, for instance, they're only allowed to insert commercials every 20 minutes (which, admittedly, is sometimes "stretched" a bit).

There has been sex on TV mentioned: Yes, it's quite common that in afternoon (!) talkshows, people discuss sexual topics more or less openly. But it gives us rather a laugh than that it would be of serious concern to any parent. And, yes, there's nudity and the famous "0900" commercials at night; but it's up to the parents to lock the remote with a "secret code" so that children can't access the TV at certain hours. There's porn channels on pay TV, but they also require you to enter a code. (Failure to enter the right code will result in an on-screen notification the parents can see!)

The only thing that's "insane" about German TV is that the dub good TV serials with bad actors' voices, and as it has all to be "lip-sync" (that means, lip movement should match the words in some sort of way), there's some really strange "translations" of originally good American episodes. -- But I must admit, jokes don't translate really good. So don't be disappointed when you see a familiar episode of some TV serial, and the Germans just don't laugh where you'd expect them to: The pun was probably lost in translation.

If you ever feel lonely, borrow a DVD with a movie you like from the next video store and watch it together with your friends. You know, the big advantage of not having a Hollywood of our own is that you get DVDs here with the English soundtrack, AND German subtitles, AND the German dubbed version, all-in-one. Encourage your friends to watch the movies they like in the original with you. That's the advantage the 21st century gives us: We're not restricted to watching movies in one language only.

Ain't that great?

I know we always loved to play Karaoke, like Sing Star, and I am sure they have Guitar Hero over there by now as well.

It depends on what type of TV you have over here. If you are used to DVR, you will be shocked, because there are roughly 30 channels in Germany and no other way but the good old VHS to record shows. Other than that, we basically have the same shows, but movies come out a lot later.

Have fun! Hope I helped

From what I remember, the hookups are different over there (of course this was 15 years ago, and their SNES looked different from ours) One of the guys in our group had a video camera (when they cost $2000) and captured something newsworthy and the local news tried to buy the tape, but they couldn't use it.

Also, I don't remember any prostitute commercials, but I remember there was no censorship. Nude scenes stayed nude, swear words were swore, and violence was violent.

Hi there,

as a rule of thumb, the same games that are popular in the US are popular in Germany as well. There are some games like Gears of War or Manhunt that are not published in Germany due to the strict regulations regarding the protection of minors - but that's that. Guitar Hero as matter of fact is equally huge over here as it is in the US.

Regarding TV... From what I can tell from new TV-Shows in your country your TV program is much more sophisticated than it is in Germany. Sadly enough the most popular shows are still Court- and Talkshows - and reality-soap formats.

In terms of technology (not the TV set, but broadcasting technology) Germany is roughly 5 years behind in areas like IP-TV, TiVo, cable and stuff. (We are in the midst of upgrading to digital broadcast-technologies at the moment.)

About the nude commercials. Yep, we hav'em. Starting 12AM broadcasters in Germany are allowed to show these commercials until 5AM in the morning. Not all make use of it, mainly the smaller digital TV stations, but it's possible and likely to zapp into one of these. But that's Germany - nude is OK as long as there is no violence.

Hope I could help...

if i remember correctly, after ten they have sex/hooker/prostitute commercials( yes nude). that is also different
