What was the "Brandenburg Gate" at the Berlin wall?

The Brandenburg Gate was sure NOT one of the main entrance points between east and west. It was one before they build the wall. Then the wall was built and no one could even get close to the gate and there was no entrance.
And Checkpoint Charlie is about 2 miles away from the gate.
Follow the link below (it's a picture of the gate shot from the west)

The Brandenburg Gate was built between1788 and 1791 as a symbol of peace, commissioned by Friedrich Wilhelm II. At that time it was a main City Gate into the city of Berlin.

It remained that way until 1961 when the Berlin Wall was built. At that point it was not a gate, but sat adjacent to the wall. No one went through the gate, but it remained a powerful symbol. Reagan gave his famous "Mr Gorbachov, tear down this wall!" speech at it. Note, Checkpoint Charlie, which was the entrance between east and west is not at or near the wall, but a mile or so away.

In 1989 when the wall opened the gate did, too, and now there is no sign of the wall. It remains a powerful symbol of peace and the unity of Berlin.

It is wrong to say "was" as the "Brandenburg Gate" ("Brandenburger Tor") still exists and is one of the main sights of Berlin nowaday.

It is important to mention that it was - during the time of the division - never something like a checkpoint to go from West Berlin to East Berlin (like for example the "Checkpoint Charlie"). During these times it belonged to the East German side making the Berlin Wall going around it. The area where the "Brandenburger Tor" has been at this time was totally closed for public as it was very near the Berlin wall....today, after they have put down the wall it is in the center of Berlin again (but you cannot drive with your car through it as it is open only for pedestrians)...

The city of Berlin was divided into East & West during the cold war... the Brandenburg Gate was one of the main entrance points between East and West.

Tax the poor !!!
