Yes, that's the Struwwelpeter! Everybody here in America is always so shocked when I say that my grandmother read that to me when I was a kid, haha.
There are many grim stories like this - Struwwelpeter (link below), the fairy tales of the Brothers Grim, and Max and Moritz are only the first examples I can think off |

Struwwelpeter and the Grimm brothers' fairy tales... -- Yes, I grew up with that. And I wondered very much, when I first read those fairy tales in English, how much censored they were; and I don't even think of the Disney versions now. The original versions of "Hänsel und Gretel", "Aschenputtel" (Cinderella) or "Dornröschen" can be really frightening.
But as to the Struwwelpeter (I think, the specific story is about a boy who keeps gnawing on his fingernails, and in some sort of dream of his, a tailor comes along, threatening to cut his fingers off with over-dimensional scissors), this is not frightening, because it's so exaggerated even a child understands the humor in it. The Struwwelpeter was one of my favorite books when I was a child, and "Hänsel und Gretel" was my favorite fairytale (I love that scene where they shove the witch into the oven). |

Yes that's from the book
Struwelpeter.
I can still tell you the hole book without looking at it.
Matter effect I have it with me in the US.
It's all written in rimes,something like Dr Seuss books, just a little bit crueler:)
These were stories so the kids don't suck on their thumbs and eat their soup,don't play with fire,sit still at the table and to behave the right way.
To be honest, I think it made me not to do some things because I was afraid there is a ugly tailor jumping in the room to cut of my little thumb with his huge scissors and so forth.
Tried to read it with my first child.But just like the Old Testament I had a horrible time trying to explain it.
No idea how my parents got me to listen to it. |
