Well, if it's a responsible store they ask for ID and if you're underage they just don't sell it to you.

Beer you can buy at 16, harder alcohol at the age of 18.

He'd be denied buying it and sent away. Is that different from America? If the person is too young, he or she is also too young to commit a criminal offence, so all you can say is "nice try, come back in a few years".

And, yes, German supermarkets do sell alcohol, but cashiers are required to ID-check everyone who seems not to be of the legal age. They introduced an electronic system where every item has to be confirmed by the cashier that cannot legally be sold to minors. -- In reality, they almost never ask for ID, and just press the "confirm" button if you look old enough.

But as German supermarkets offer alcohol on the shelf, the temptation is great to try and steal a bottle. I'd recommend you never try; there are cameras all around, the bottles carry hidden security chips, and when the alarm rings, calling the police is mandatory. Nothing much will happen to underaged persons, though, but being brought home in a police car is not the thing you'd want your neighbors to see.

normally nothing . . . the seller may tell you to just leave if they figure your age out. Cops are not going to come around for that.

Nothing to the underaged. It is not forbidden for an underaged to drink alcolhol. It is forbidden to sell alcohol to an underaged and that will be punished. Really the drinking age is 0, you should better say selling age. It is forbidden to sell beer and wine to persons under 16. It is forbidden to sell destilled alcohol to persons under 18. Attention when something contains only 1 drop of destilled alcohol, it is forbidden to sell to persons under 18, chocolate with cognac or a cuba libre for example.
But your parents can have some problems, if they provide you with too much alcohol.
