Brandenburg Gate, follow the line of the wall around to checkpoint charlie... it's really good... the best shopping is in the old Western areas, near to the Zoo Garden.. i went in the Autumn too, really enjoyable.. buy a guide book..

Kemmy
Checkpoint Charlie, Topography of Terror (Shows what the Gestapo did, with lots of photos), Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, Pergamon Museum (my favourite historical museum), Reichstag (environmentally friendly and self-sufficient building).

Check out: http://www.hoteltravel.com/germany/berlin/guides/top10things.htm

By the way, Auschwitz is in Poland (near Krakow).

The question was for what to see/do in Berlin.

A couple of bright ones suggested to look at Auschwitz which
is in central Poland.

truefrog2002
catch a train/bus to hamburg
awesome

Hi. I would recommend seeing the Kaiser Wilhelm church - an interesting mix of modern and older architecture. You can see my panoramic images of this and many other Berlin sites here: http://www.360travelguide.com/results.asp?StartNum=21&CountrySelect=Germany&LocSelect=Berlin

I'd also recommend taking a hat!... it can get cold in Berlin.
Have a great time .

fed up with stupid questions
Stay at the Adlon Hotel and enjoy it, then go to the unbelievable main train station (Hauptbahnhof) and after that, walk 50 metres to the bus tour stops and do a tour, you can get on and off anywhere you like for about 12 euros. Also take a river boat tour on the Spree. This all sounds touristy but in any major city in the world, the bus tours are a great way of getting your bearings and figuring out where you would like to visit for a longer time.
Aushwitz is depressing and it's also in Poland!

Berlin is a gorgeous city and just being there is amazing. I'd recommend going to the parliament building (Reichstag) because there is a beautiful rooftop glass dome, open to the public, from which there are amazing views of the city. It's a plus that this is right near the Brandenburg Gate.
Also, visit the KDW (Kaufhaus des Westens) a huge department store in the city. Go to the top floor which is the food floor. It is a sight to see and you can get an amazing lunch with a choice of any kind of traditional German food.

ROBIN HOOD
Go to the old olympic Stadium

dekrgsa
go on one of those city bus tours. they are the best way to see the city, you can hope on and off as you like so you can jump off as soon as you see something you like the look of.

have fun! you will love it!

Auschwitz...ha ha...everybody is a comedian...yeah...that's right in the middle of Berlin..isn't it? HA HA!!! I suggest you stop for coffee and cake at the Opern Palais and visit the Pergamon museum.

john b
Berlin is such a wonderful overwhelming place with so much to see and do. Check out www.jbb7994.com

becky t
the rough guide to berlin tells you everything there is to do...the tv tower has some good views of berlin and alexanderplatz. the reichstag although the queues are massive , bburg gate , sachsenhausen concentration camp is close by on the s bahn and is definately worth a visit. checkpoint charlie and musuem.you can take a free walking tour which shows you all the main sights if you are only there for a few days its a good overview.

Steve C
Check point Charlie museum, you get a real feel for the desperation of the old 'Eastern block' people.

I suggest the Brandenburg Gate , Eternal Flame and several former Soviet war museums.

fscarberry20
You have to visit Auschwitz. Its really something everyone should see.

tattooed.dragon
I agree - Auschwitz is very good. But you should just take it as it comes...
...I was based in Berlin for 6 months and was on crutches, so couldn't work... I went to 4 or 5 galleries or museums every week (sometimes more) and never visited the same one twice. I hadn't even scratched the surface.

Do a bit of research on the web, see if there are any special events going on... it's a great city and very vibrant.... I've learned that using a first and second trip as "tasters" is very handy... you'll find out so much when you're there, that you'll already have plenty of stuff to do for your next trip!!

Enjoy..
