I would visit Heidelberg. There is something for everyone there. You can shop and do some sightseeing at the same time. There is also a lot of history as well. The Castle is there and there is also a nature trail you can walk if hiking is your thing. Also, within 30 minutes surrounding the town you can be in numerous other small towns. Schwetzingen which has the schlossgardens. Mannheim, also has shopping and parks. Speyer, has museums etc. These are all accessible within 30 minute of Heidelberg. If you like Racing, Hockenheim is within 15 minutes drive. Across the river from Heidelberg is an outdoor auditorium where Hitler would give speeches as well. You could be there 2 weeks and not see everything. I grew up there and my Family lives in the surrounding area.

Hammelburg, Erfurt, Meiningen, Himmelstadt... define "small" for me, if you please. I might send you to places you can walk through in ten minutes. But they would be cute! ;)

Come to visit Marburg in the state Hessen. A very pretty town at the river Lahn with a wonderful castle, an old university and a lot of very old houses around.

I am from the north and I love the north. There are a lot. Schleswig, Lubeck, Friedrichstadt, Hamburg-Bergedorf, Glückstadt, Glücksburg, Stade, Lüneburg, Hitzacker, Dannenberg and further to the south Bückeburg, Hameln, Bodenwerder ... but also have a look at the bigger ones Hamburg, Lübeck, Bremen. Sorry, don´t have experiance from the east.
A tip google for your city and webcam a lot have some. And have a look, but remind the time difference!

Heidelberg, Germany is beautiful. I've been there, and it's got Heidelberg Castle towering above it on a small hill and a lovely town. You can see the castle from the town square. It's very picturesque. The River cuts through it and it's wonderful.

A cute town as in one? There are thousands! Each place has its own special appeal depending on what you are interested in.

In the north you will notice the scandinavian influence in building style (thatched roofs, little harbours made all from wood) My favourite town north was Ratzeburg and on the coast, Travemunde.

If you like medium-sized mountains then the villages in the Harz mountains are amazing like Wernigerode, Quedlingburg, etc. They also have a huge bonfire and Hexentanz on Brocken mountain in April.

Berlin is the capital and worth the visit for history, Leipzig and Weimar for music and culture.

Further South are the Alps and Munich, capital of Bavaria. For a nice bicycle ride, wine and cute villages do a cycle trip along the Mosel river.

I like Lueneburg, Stade, Luebeck ...very beautiful small towns. Then of course my favorite is Hamburg.

Without a doubt, Berlin is the ugliest, most horrible city I've ever been to & the only place I've been where I felt unsafe (followed by dirty old men, Turkish children spat at me, etc & this was all in the day time - I wouldn't dare go out at night unless you have a big guy with you). So ignore what that other guy is saying.

There are loads but for me the best experience was seeing Neuschwantein Castle in Fussen (catch the train or I think the tour buses that do the Romantic Road go to Fussen). Any town on the Romantic Road, also Bremen, Leipzig & it's a city but Munich is great, especially on a sunny day, great architecture.

Salzburg in nearby Austria is a sweet little town too & with a castle.

Denmark has cute towns like Kobe, etc (you can hire bicycles & cycle round Kobe as it's all flat) that have cobbled streets & cute little houses with thatched rooves. Danes are really friendly too. They have castles too like Germany.
