Thanksgiving and Erntedank are two different things.

Thanksgiving will be celebrated ONLY in USA or by USA-citizens in other countries outside USA. Why? well as much as I know this celebration began with the Mayflower and the pilgrims and their safe arrival and to give thanks for the things that one has at the conclusion of the harvest season. However I think in USA the Story of the Mayflower has a central role in this celebration.

Erntedankfest oder Erntedank is a religious celebration refered to the season for reaping and gathering grain and other grown products. People celebrates a successful harvests. It is believed that this celebration was originally for the german god "Wotan" and was taken by the christians.

Erntedank-Sunday is usually on the first Sunday in October, a lot earlier than the American Thanksgiving. It's not really a familiar holiday. In the countryside there are harvest-parades (Erntefeste), mostly already in September - as long as the weather is reliable. I have picked some random photos for you:

The American Thanksgiving is unknown in Germany. Nevertheless, all four Advent-Sundays are small events with Advent-wreaths, Christmas-markets, and mulled wine.
