Christmas Eve(Heilig Abend) is "the going to church and opening presents day". All stores close at noon on the 24th. Santa Clause (Weihnachtsmann and or the Christ Kindel depending on your religious believes) will bring the presents after 6pm. Which co insides with going to church at 6pm. The 25th and 26th are considered Christmas holidays for the purpose of going over to visit family. There are Church services on both days as well. Both days are holidays and stores are closed as well.
When the Christ Kindel brings the presents it leaves a bit of its golden blond hair in the tree as a sign that it has been there. |

Heiligabend - Christmas Eve, is the traditional day to open presents. Santa Clause comes on the 24th.
The 25th and 26th are also holidays called the "1st and 2nd" Christmas Days. |

24th eve In the East at least that I know of that is when Santa comes is the 24th there but the days following are also considered Holiday as well I am sure right up to New Years day.
(Really ALwin?? Im confused then.. my friends in Weimar are always opening their gifts on the 24th and telling me to call them that day?? Is it maybe different in the East or just an un orthodox friends maybe? I only know what i saw three Christmas's there. It was in Weimar all three times though. Please enlighten me, Id like to know..thnks)

Wulf and Alvin are both correct
The celebrating begins christmas eve 24th including the gifts and for the religious both catholic and protestant going to chuch.
Followed by two hollidays 25 and 26 of December.
Whoever gave thumbs down is not true as there is no wrong answer here they were just incomplete . |

Christmas eve is the Dec. 24, where the people (friends/families) come together and open their presents and eat together. 25 is the 1. holiday, 26 is the second holiday. |

> as well I am sure right up to New Years day
I'd wish Wulf were correct there, but he isn't. The 25th and 26th are holidays. On 25th you traditionally meet with your family and eat the "christmas goose"; compare it to the American thanksgiving, which we don't have. 26th is for relaxation. Or dishwashing, if you're the unlucky who had to invite them this year.
Next official holiday is Jan 1st, although Dec 31st is inofficially treated as such (shops close at noon).
It is true, however, that some companies close between christmas and new year's; but the working days in between go off from their workers' holiday balance. You HAVE to take these days off, want it or not.

@Wulf, you misunderstood. You were perfectly right with the 24th Dec. I only referred to the part about the holidays. That's why I started this post with the quote I wanted to refer to. I didn't refer to your whole posting. |
