i would go in the fall during Oktoberfest!! If you like German Bear!! There is also many Castles and other attractions to see too and you are not far from Austria either hence the Alps!

I usually go every year either in the spring or fall. shoulder season.

If you have time off in the spring that would be the best time! I live two hours away from Munich on a military post, we've been many times. In the summer Bavaria gets nasty heat waves and towns like Munich are huge tourist attractions so it would be very very crowded. In the winter theres the chance of snow and you have to remember everything is outside. You'll be walking a lot! Don't go in the winter if you can avoid it. I don't really like Northern Europe in the winter just because all the malls are outdoors and its freezing wet and cold. Oktoberfest is way overrated in Munich, they have a no strollers rule because you're literally shoulder to shoulder with people. Imagine what its like at a concert, but up and down entire streets. Good luck ever finding a bathroom and young drunk Germans sing and sway and will bump you all over the place. So, with all that said. Spring is the best time. There are smaller festivals that take place too you should hit, Germans celebrate everything. Check out the German visitors site for details on when those are.

Essentially you have the choice between going during Octoberfest time or not.

If you go outside Octoberfest season, good months to go would be May, June and September. Airlines offer especially good deals when you fly out of Munich the day on or just before Octoberfest starts.

If you cannot go during the above months it pretty much does not matter when you go. There is either going to be so-so to bad weather or huge crowds in July+August.

Oktoberfest. Avoid anytime when VW/Audi goes on vacation (the whole company shuts down and Every employee is on holiday during that period).

Spring and Summertime is the best, but Munich is very expensive. Have fun is great city.

I went over spring break (early/mid April) and it was absolutely great....I'm talking 70+ degree weather, sunny days, clean air, flowers....just beautiful!!! I LOVE MUNICH!!!! Have fun whenever you go!!!

I was just in Munich last weekend! And I had a blast, it's a great city to visit. As for the time of year, it was chilly (but it was January/February, so duh!), and the trees were all bare, so I'd imagine the scenery would be nicer in the summer/fall. BUT when I went to visit the castles (Neuschwanstein) in the Bavarian Alps, it was snowing all day--beautiful beyond words! Some of the best views I could imagine.

And if your winter break gives you time before Christmas, go to Germany then! Every city transforms their city centers into beautiful "Wintermarkt"s (Christmas Markets)--it will get you into the Christmas spirit 100x more than waiting in line an another American mall!

Oh, and flights/transportation is usually significantly cheaper during wintertime! You'll only have to deal with shorter daylight hours, but that just leaves more nighttime to spend at the local beerhouse!

My favorite time in Germany(I was stationed there for 4 years!) was the month of October. Most of the fall festivals happen in this month (which is after the Oktoberfest celebrations finish and all the tourists go home) and they can usually give you a better time than the big cities! I loved it when the festivals came out and the downtown (which was usually a town square area of about 100 yards square or so) filled with people and the local markets brought out fresh breads, the local butcher set up a few coolers and a butchers block with some knives and everyone ate until they were sick! the kids were a blast and the bier was flowing (fairly cheaply too!!!). Definitely October for me!

It really doesn't matter because Munich is always worth a visit.
But I can tell you the WORST time to go there: that is during the Oktoberfest.
Places are extremely crowded virtually anywhere, prices are soaring, you won't get accomodation AT ALL, all sorts of nasty drunks from all over the world in 1 city....
Come another time.

Miss
You'll be better off going in winter. At least for spring break. Why because you'll spend $450 on a plane ticket verses $1300 (june through sept). Makes a big difference in the long run. You won't have to worry about weather either. The climate has changed durasically over the past 5 years. Germany has been usually warm in the winter months and many of the areas don't have any snow. Dec is great because there are a lot of festivals. You have the chirstmas market. The 2 christmases. x-mas eve, first christmas and second christmas. on the 5 of January you have three kings day. Spring break is easter time and there are some festivities but not as manny as xmas.

TravelGuy
to avoid spending a lot of money you should avoid summer and octoberfest. octoberfest ends on october 5 this year so anytime in october, november, december after octoberfest would be the best time to go.
to cut through the deals, you should check out travelcusehotels.com to book your hotel. the site is an aggregator which means it takes offers from various online sites and shows you the best deals. good luck! have fun!
