Oh, you will LOVE Muenchen. If you are going now, you can catch the world famous Christmas market. You will want to see the Nymphenburg Palace, the English Garden and the Hofbrauhaus (a huge beer house). There are George Washington statues in Munich also---he's a hero there.
On a note: I was in Munich right after 9/11. The German people poured out their hearts to Americans there. Every corner had a shrine of thousands of candles and the teens had painted american flags on their jeans. They are wonderful people and you will be surprised how much Germany reminds you of America. We have certainly influenced each other in many ways. Have fun!
Oh, if you have time...get a train ticket and explore further. Switzerland is a wonderful option. Also, you can get a plane ticket from Munich to Amsterdam for another fun day. It's about a 50 minute plane ride. |

In addition to the wonderful places mentioned above, I would like to add the concentration camp memorial site in Dachau. The place is bleak and foreboding, and the atmosphere will impact you! You can reach Dachau by the suburban train (S-Bahn) and once you are there look for a bus that stops in front of the memorial site.
If you are in Munich, the Neuschwanstein Castle (2 hours by train) is also a must. Take the train from Munich Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) to Fuessen, and outside the train station at Fuessen you can take a bus to the two nearby castles (just follow the crowd of tourists).
The pedestrian zones near Marienplatz/Karlsplatz and the Food Market (Viktualienmarkt) are also beautiful and worth a visit. |
