Adjacent to City Hall is the former Imperial Palace

The Casimir Castle; the "hunters from the electoral Palatinate" resided here
In the living room of the "hunter from the electoral Palatine"...
The renaissance castle which the Palatine count Johann Casomir had built near Barbarossa's Kaiserpfalz was destroyed often but never quite disappeared. The "Casimirsaal" which was built on the ruins of the former splendorous building reminds us of its former glory...
Hohenecken Castle, less than an hour's walk from Vogelweh, may have been our very favorite place around Kaiserslautern. Students from Kaiserslautern American High School often walked up from Vogelweh to the castle.
The nearby town of Landstuhl has quite a good Web site, which (as of October 2004) is entirely in German. It includes several excellent pages about Nanstein Castle, in German, with a very nice map of the castle.

Quick Tips/Suggestions:

Best Way to Get Around:
The best ways to get around are to rent a car (it is inexpensive to rent a mercedes or volvo, and so fun to drive) or to get a pass to take the trains. Train passes are not too expensive, but should be planned. There are different types of passes (youth, senior, and saver passes; if you buy more than one) and different areas for passes (one to six different countries). These passes can be bought for a certain period of time four days to months, and vary in price. Trains in Europe are easy to take and overall very safe.

General rule: if 'berg' or 'burg' is part of the towns name, there is or used to be a castle there
