Phrasebooks usually are useless: Either they're outdated (telling you phrases no one uses anymore), or they're too inflexible: What use is it to know the phrase "What is the way to the railway station?" if the phrasebook doesn't help me to understand the answer?
I'd recommend instead that you learn a few German words and part of the grammar. You can do so by watching the news and movies in German; what the h*** is the internet for if not for global communication? Try, e.g. www.tagesschau.de , Germany's state television daily news.

Best to do it online. For a dictionary here is the best:

BBC website has a good languages section:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/greek/
Alternatively, you can always type what phrases you want into yahoo and wait for a German to answer.

Phrase books are not useless because I use my German phrase book all of the time and it has helped me a lot. By studying my German phrase book one hour every night I have been able to pick German up quite quickly. Its not the book that is the problem, it is how much effort you put into learning German. I get all of my phrase books from a book store in a neighboring town. So try looking in a book store in the language section. You will find that they have some very useful things. It takes a lot of work to learn a new language but it is very fun and useful once you start picking it up. I would also go to some online book stores and see what they have as well. Good Luck.
