Try the german youth hostels which are even great for families! Quite affordable, meals are usually alright as well and all over the place. You should reserve early though as you won´t be the only one looking for a place :-)

I would stay in a hostel they are full of people from all over the world and you get to meet people that you would not necessarily meet in a fancy hotel. they are cheap to so you have more money to spend on the things you want
