Where is a good site to learn to speak German?

Not one you have to pay for, but just a basic site that teaches you the Basics?

Hello,

For the basics and to have interactive learning which is fun and correct.....

I recommend...

BBC learning - I live in Germany and I have used it - it is good!!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/german/

try it out - I think it is one of the best

even has tips on 'pulling' and 'cool German'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/german/cool/

What makes it great is that you can listen to expressions and do quizzes...really try it!!
xx

Also have a look at these sites:

The Goethe Institut site has good material
http://www.goethe.de/lrn/enindex.htm

Plus the Deutsche Welle
http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,5825,2469,00.html
or
http://www.deutsch-lernen.com/learn-german-online/beginners/lesson_1.php

when you are more advanced you can find great exercises here
http://www.aufgaben.schubert-verlag.de/arbeitsblaetter_a1_z/a1_arbeitsblaetter_index_z.htm

im afraid that the best way to learn German - or any language for that matter - is to spend time in that country. i spent two years in Germany between 10-12 yrs old and now im 16 my German is of A-Level standards (as i know because i have taken my exams)

Oh, the BBC has a LEARN GERMAN part of the site. Here it be:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/german/lj/

I've used it a few times, it's quite good. It gives you the kind of things you would need if you were visiting Germany, like how to book a room in a hotel, or how to order food at a restaurant, that kind of thing.

If you really want to learn it then after trying out these free websites, why not go to library and get a copy of Pimsleur language course for German. It is a great course.

Go onto a site called language buddy where you teach english or what ever else you speak and they'll teach you in return. the way it works is you log on and setup a profile say what language you want to learn and choose the country you are considering then you can work it out from there its really simple. Its also a nice way to meet people all over the world.

I can teach you cause I'm a native German speaker.
What do you want to know?
By the way, German is one of the difficult languages in the world and you need lots of practice in using the grammar and pronunciation.

You need book and DVD. Berlitz has something like that. You can read and same time listen this will be easy to learn. I remember I was teaching in Houston Berlitz Int. Language School German, our students buy something like that and they learn very quickly simple conversation words.

Google it! I'm sure there are videos on google to help learn German. I am learning through books and CD's. I am still learning the beautiful sounding language of German but I find library books, CD's, and german speaking movies with sub titles helpful as well as the internet:)
