I love the South of Germany and am a big fan of the Ludwig castles. One of the most beautiful, but lesser known is near Rosenheim in the middle of a lake called Chiemsee. The whole area is beautiful and just a jump off the E45 autobahn from Munich. The little city or village of Prien which is where you catch the ferry to the castle is adorable and has a lot to do there, too. Another favorite and little known city just a jump on the autobahn from Munchen is Ulm where the tallest gothic cathedral is located. You can walk up to the top along an open staircase where you can see the structures holding up the spires and the gargoyles up close! Of course for a sobering historical pilgrimmage, I usually go north of Munchen to Dachau in honor of the holocaust victims. There is a nearby castle worth visiting and you'll wonder how the residents didn't know what was happening at the camp.

Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Heidelberg as well with its famous castle, gorgeous places ..people, mentality and dialects are different in each town. Can't find out a typical german thing which caractereizes all of them.
And there are really pretty landscapes e.g. in the South like the Alps, the Bodensee with Constance.

Erzgebirge and Thuringen
Go to Seiffen and watch the original nutcrackers and other
wooden ornaments, etc. being made. THIS is the orginal part of Germany where they are made.

Get some lace in Plauen

Go to Leipzig to discover history and music (find out who played and is buried there!)

I lived there for 1.5 years and stayed last summer again.
It's wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
