Where is the best place to see the christmas markets and decorations? |
we are thinking of going to germany in december to see how it is decorated for xmas and check out the markets, where is best and where would you fly into, we've never been anywhere in germany before so have no idea where to try. we'd love it to be really xmasy and traditional |

The most well known Chistmas Market 'Weihnachtsmarkt' in Germany is in Rothenburg ob der Tauber (a middle age walled Free City), there's a shop there that is world famous for Christmas decorations and accessories, although the name of the shop escapes me at the moment. You can buy things in the store there and they will ship it to your home...taking care of all the customs and duties...things that you'd have to do when you got home.
Another good Christmas Market is the Barrock Weihnachtsmarkt in Ludwigsberg, by Stuttgart. This is considered the best Market in Baden-Wuettermberg.
Most towns and cities in the former DDR have some of the most traditional Christmas Markets, meaning they're not overrun by a lot of premade items you can buy in stores. About 90 % of the items are all hade made and they are all different.

Take a hotel in Aachen ( near by Cologne) and visit the local Christmas market. Not as crowdy and "tourist orientated" (means expensive with lot of "made in China"...) as for example Nürnberg. Aachen is the German center for "Printen "-baking. Printen are a kind of Lebkuchen, a spicy Christmas bakery - very typical !!!

Nearby Aachen the castle Satzvey is located in the little city of Mechernich in the Eifel. The whole December is there a medieval Christmas market, very special with lot of flair.

Several suggestions are worthwhile:
Nuremberg - has a traditional market
Dresden - known for its market, which is one of the largest
Berlin - there are something like 50 markets, including alternative or wacky ones there (but of course also te traditional fairs), so basically it is the best place, especially since you can get a day-tour from Berlin to Dresden and see the market there. |

Hi!
Nuremberg is definitively the most famous in Germany and very nice... but honestly it became very comsumer-oriented over the last years and it lost a lot of its traditional athmosphere. But anyhow it's still nice and worth to visit (as the whole city anyway :-)).
If you have a car or people to drive you around then I suggest you to go to the smaller cities around Nuremberg (like Hersbruck, Lauf etc.) or few kilometres more to Würzburg and (as already suggested) Rothenburg o.d.T. - both approx one hour from Nuremberg by car!

In the Middle Ages, it was an Imperial Free City. A significant fraction of Rothenburg is carfree. Many Christmas stores there, and such a beautiful city to boot! |
