Now someone's finally asking about the north and there's still people that only talk about Bavaria and the Black Forest :-/
So if you want to see something else than funny hats, dresses and kookoo clocks go to Bremen, Luebeck and especially Hamburg. Island Sylt is also a very special place to be but takes time and some money to go there. If you have a car at hand you can also spend a day at the sea side and do some city hopping to places like Emden, Husum or Wilhelmshaven. |

Hamburg is great! Frankfurt is beautiful! If you want great night life, shopping, and a little sight seeing go to Berlin definitely. It is sort-of like the New York of Germany! I love it there. |

Germany has many "best" places. I personally like the north, it is in many ways less conservative than the south. Protestantism is frequent, and the liberal influence of the Dutch and the Swedish can be felt. The weather is cooler and more rainy. Staying on one of the North Sea islands in winter can be very quiet and relaxing, while the same island becomes totally flooded with tourists in summer. You can in some ways compare the North Sea shore with the coast of New England in the USA. A popular sport there is mudflat hiking.

Great cities to visit are Hamburg, Bremen, Lueneburg, Luebeck, Rostock and Berlin. East and north of Berlin is the Mecklenburger Seenplatte (Mecklenburg Lake District), a chain of lakes which is popular with water sport tourists.
