Which German city is the best? coldest?

There isn't much variation in Germany's weather patterns at all. It's full-blown four seasons: very cold in winter, but also hot in summer.

What's "best" depends on what your preferences. Munich is known for a historic and monumental city center, which is nonetheless surrounded on all sides by suburban/rural conservatives. Berlin sprawls over vast, disparate neighborhoods, but it is also very media-saavy and energetic. Frankfurt is Europe's #1 place for skyscapers and modern structures, but it also has a reputation as a rather dull down-to-business city.

It varies depending on your experiences, of course...but personality wise, I'd say German-U.S. comparisons are similar to the following:

Berlin = Los Angeles
Dusseldorf = Seattle
Hamburg = Chicago
Frankfurt = a cross between Houston's culture and New York's skyline
Munich = Washington-Baltimore-Virginia
Cologne = San Francisco

Berlin is most likely the coldest. Munich is in the south.

All the above cities have distinct, uniques positives, much like American cities. It's up to your personality and passions to decide what's your favorite city. Frankfurt is super-modern and German's financial capital. Dueseldorf is also super-modern. Berlin is possibly the most historic city in Europe, along with London and Paris and Rome). Check out Leipzig for a trendy, artsy city on the rise in former East Germany.

i guess it is Hamburg... it's more in the north than Berlin and it's raining very much over there. when i was in Hamburg it was very cold (september)...

Spotti I am telling the people in Koln you said their city was too unimportant-- LOL...I loved it myself....As the elevation of Germany rises as it moves from Berlin in the north to the southern alps (see alps with snow on them ??) there is little difference in temperature--when it gets cold it is cold as crap all over)....(.btw that is why the Rhine is one of the few major rivers that flows south to north..) Anywho--Berlin is like a small New York and to me Munich is like Beverly Hills--love it, love it, love it....give it a shot...I like both...

I really enjoyed Munich the best. Munich is the coldest because it is down near the alps.

The temperatures don't differ that much, but as a rule of thumb you could say the closer to the water the warmer it is in winter as the sea moderates the temperature and generally the temperatures in the east are lower than in the west for the same reason. So I'd say Munich or Berlin might be the coldest at least in winter. But for the same reason I'd say in summer these two are the hottest.

Which city is the best depends on what you like. My favourite would be Hamburg as I like the maritime flair of the city.

I was in Cologne .. it was cold ..(i loved it )
and in frankfurt too ..visited dusseldorf,berlin , and munchen

but i can't recognize any difference .. lol .. in the temprature i mean

Their all nice but it depends on what you are going to do or want to do one of my favorite places to go was Garmisch-Partenkirchen you can go skiing it is beautiful there. Austria just a drive away.

I loved berlin, munich was OK. Berlin seemed the coldest but maybe that's just when I visited

Since I am German and I used to live there I prefer Frankfurt am Main. The city is very small (only 500.000 people) and it is so easy to get around there (public transportation). There is this great mix of people from all over the world because of the banks (headquarters of the European Central Bank, like the FED but for Europe). You can go to any bar any time and wear whatever you want and nobody would be arrogant or snobbish. DÃ¼sseldorf is a little bit sophisticated, Hamburg is too cold, Berlin is very cool too, Cologne is too unimportant but they have good beer (KÃ¶lsch) there.
