My opinion based on 20 years of travel to Munich is that it is one of Germany's most progressive cities, despite the firmament of Bavarian conservatism that is much more pervasive outside the city.
Munichers are mostly forward thinking, fun-loving people. By far more fun that northern Germans. Bremen, Hannover, Berlin and Hamburg are much more filled with popmous elites who are obsessed with money and status.
Munich is clean and friendly. A "hippie" should adore it. Well, maybe not the clean part, hehe.

Munich is the beer capital of Germany and hosts the Oktoberfest each fall. Bavarians are the friendliest Germans of all. If you want to "joke a place up" go to northern Germany. Those people are cold fish.
