Which is best city to stay in Germany for 2 days? |
Hi,
I am visiting Germany for 2 days with my family and will not want to spend a lot on staying. Can you suggest which city is economical to stay and also which is easier to access other cities within Germany i.e it should be well connected.
I do have an Inter-rail pass(Zone C). Will I have to pay supplement to travel in Germany? How much would I have to pay if I want to travel from say Frankfurt to Munich or stutgart? |

Hi
Firstly, Germany is in Zone C for the interrail pass so you won't have to pay any more for travelling by train, therefore you don't have to worry about paying to travel between those cities.
I'd recommend that you visit Freiburg, it's quite a large city in the south west of Germany, by the black forest and half an hour's drive away from the French border. It's also close to the cities you mentioned - karlsruhe and stuttgart are the two next big cities close by. I lived there for 17 years - it really is a beautiful city in a nice area and the nightlife is great.
Hope that helped - enjoy your journey. |

You only pay supplement if you use ICE trains, IIRC. Use the Deutsche Bahn website and click "without ICE" and you get connections that are supplement free.
If you cannot find connections without ICE, don't worry. Supplement is only a few EUR. I forgot how much, but less than 10.

The site below is the official tourism website of Germany:
http://www.germany-tourism.de/
About the area around Frankfurt:
The states of Hessen and Rhineland-Palatinate share the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a gorge with a rich history. Its profusion of prestigious architectural monuments is among the most impressive anywhere in Europe. With its vine-clad slopes, idyllic villages on the banks of the Rhine and multitude of castles, the valley epitomises the romance of the Rhineland.
If you do not want to spend a lot on staying and travel with children under 16, consider staying in one of the HI youth hostels. In Germany they are specifically geared towards families.

A nice city to visit from Frankfurt is Heidelberg. It is only one hour from Frankfurt airport away by train and one of the most visited cities in Germany. (Lots of Japanese tourists who are doing "Europe in ten days" and who fly out of Frankfurt.)

I'm afraid that with only Frankfurt and Heidelberg on your platter, you are doing the typical "tourist Germany". But since you got only 2 days, I think these two cities offer you a very basic introduction to Germany. Hope you come back with more time soon! You need to see Berlin and the rest of Germany properly, two weeks is minimum. |

Freiburg& Heidelberg are old and beautiful, but if this will be your only "German experience" (at least for a while), I suggest Munich or Berlin since there is SO much to do, and you can choose out what is interesting for you. In general, hotels in the city itself are more expensive than on the outskirts. So stay outside of the downtown areas and take the train/s-Bahn (tram). Just get a tram pass for a day or two if your own pass doesn`t cover it. Enjoy! |

The most beautiful city is Hamburg up in the north. A lot of cities are easily accessible around it, such as Berlin (Capitol), Quedlinburg (medieval town) and others.
For prices of railway check www.db.de, the website of the Deutsche Bahn (German Railway). |
