Which is the best and fastest train to go between Brussels and Dusseldorf/Cologn, Germany?
Uhm, the answer below is not correct. ICE (InterCityExpress) trains frequent all over Europe. Please note that there are IC and ICE trains, the former having more stops than the latter.
There is however the ultra-highs-peed train THALYS between Cologne and Brussels. This train connects Cologne with Brussels and Paris. A seperate Thalys goes from Brussels to Amsterdam as well. This train exceeds speeds of 200mph regularly. Do not confuse the Thalys with the famous TGV, the French high speed train. The Thalys is the newer model available only for above mentioned routes.
Also, do not confuse these trains with the Eurostar, which is a high-speed but not an ultra-high-speed train, which connects Brussels with London.

A word of advice:
The Thalys arrives at Brussels Midi railway station and although it is not as bad as Brussels Noord, the surrounding neighbourhood is not the finest the city has to offer. Petty crime can be high. Be careful of your belongings. Pickpocketing has been rampant in the recent years and organized groups have been known to grab laptop bags out of travellers hands. Use common sense.
