I'm originally from Berlin and have recently traveled back there a few times. It's one of the most beautiful cities - especially for people that appreciate the modern architecture mixed in with the remains of old Berlin.
Rotenburg ob der Tauber is amazing because it's a medival city, fully preserved and complete with the ancient fortress wall. Another great ancient city is Goslar in the Harz mountains.
If you want to see a gorgeous preserved city center, I'd recommend Bremen. It's not as big as Hamburg, but unlike Hamburg, it still has some of its old architecture preserved, including a beautiful cathedral and an old city quarter with tiny houses and alleyways so slim that you have to walk single-file in some places. It's whimsical and gorgeous.

@ShlomoyNy + Geier55,
don't bother about the thumbs down, we Hamburgians play in the 1st European League all the others best in the seccond, and envy is a trait of German provincial charachter. To all the others I will say, yes there are a lot of German towns beeing pretty and where you can have a good life (I am a friend of small towns), but Hamburg is the ONLY German CITY which can afford to play in the 1st League of European Cities.
Hamburg is in Germany Nr. 1 except Berlin, but Berlin gets a lot of federal help. Berlin has a jobless quote of 14.6% Hamburg of 8.1% what city do you believe is more secure?
Greetings from Hamburg, Germany
Heinz
@all: We do speak about cities --- not villages. If we speak about towns --- lets speak about my town --- just at the boarder of Hamburg --- general per capita income in Germany place Nr. 4 better than Munich town. Joblessquote less than 3%. But what the mayor of my town can spend in a year for culture --- the mayor of Hamburg spents in an hour. |

Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia. I love the Domplatz, and Angerplatz areas. Not to mention that old bridge that the Gera river flows under (I forget the name of it). |

I'd say, home is where I lay my hat, but I'm definitely in favor of Berlin, which can't be beat; but there are small towns I also like. Starnberg (near Munich) and the Starnberg lake are beautiful in summer. |
