You are right. During the Nazi regime, there was the "Hitlerjugend" (or the "Bund Deutscher Mädel" for girls), a youth organisation where kids had to wear uniforms and were indoctrinated with Nazi propaganda. So it was decided to not have kids wear uniforms in schools.

Time and again, it is discussed at some school whether to introduce school uniforms, so that nobody is discrimated against because of his/her clothing, but even most parents are opposed to that as school uniforms wouldn't be free and they wouldn't accept to force their children into some piece of clothing they don't like and even pay for that.

Some schools, however, offer t-shirts and sweaters with the school emblem on them, and the kids love to buy them. (I have one from my old school, too.)

I second Alwin on this. Some schools have tried to introduce them, though those were mostly "ghetto" schools who tried to stop their students from discriminating against each other, since the majority of students was with what is politically correct called a "migration background". Meaning they all have roots in other cultures, such as Russia, Turkey, Albania, Kroatia, and so on and so forth, and those cultures have a tendency to clash when mixed with a youthfull amount of hormones. And they clash in male and female, so... well, it was a nice thought by the therapists, but unfortunately the kids didn't like the clothes and remembered who their colleagues were and where they were from, no matter that they were now dressed up in uniform, and everybody began to see it as a big joke, so they stopped. But with grat regularity, the subject is pulled up again.
Opposers do state the point that Germany once was "uniformed" in their thinking and expression and that didn't go so well (what an understatement!), and that kids in school are supposed to grow up and find out who they truly are (who is doing THAT in school, anyway, I ask), and that doesn't work out when you are supposed to be wearing uniform in school... And the debate goes on...

I live in Germany and so far I cannot recall seeing schoolchildren in uniforms, I can't say that it's not that way for all schools over here though as I have only been here a few years.

Why not? Except for the Naziregime, we´ve never had schooluniforms and i like it! When my school would acquire uniform, oh my god, i would go on strike!

What does "non-unifrom" mean? No uniform?? You make no sense.
