What eeliko wrote is pretty good, but the guest workers in the 50´s
came from Spain and Italy. The Turks came mostly in the 60´s and 70´s (started 1961). The mistake that the German government made, was to allow theese guest workers to bring family members to Germany. So they simply did not want to go back home.
Suddenly there was 100.000 turkish guest workers and 500.000 family members, a continuing story. Especially older Turks still don´t speak any German. The integration of people from Italy, Spain, Greece was no problem. The Turks never wanted to integrate due to different culture and religion. They created a sub cultur like china town in the USA. In Germany live 1,8 Million Turks and another 700.000 with
German citizenship. Why do they live in Germany? A better life -
by far - than as a farmer on stony fields in Anatolia. And they learned pretty fast how to use the German social system. However, many
Turks started a business (shops and even some big companies). |

In the 50s, germany recruited foreign workers in Turkey, Spain, Italy and Greece since the booming german industry needed more workers than the country could provide. The original idea was that these workers would go back to their original countries after a couple of years, however, things turned out differently and a number of those workers stayed. Turkey was where most of those "guest workers" came from. |

Germany is VERY socialist and leftist. |

During the second Reich the Ottoman Empire was an ally of Imperial Germany, and special trade and work agreements between the Ottoman Empire and Germany were made. Many of these agreements were retained between the wars and post WW2. After WW2 germany was severely short of manpower, and "Guest Workers" from turkey were encouraged to come to Germany.
Somewhat like the relationship between Mexico and the USA, where Mexicans have privileges over immigrants from other countries the Turks have privileges in Germany. |

the german's needed cheap workers to rebuild germany after the war.
so they hired cheap help from other countries. especially turkey.
they stayed in germany, started families there and brought over some of their relatives.
turkish people have large families, so they have spread all over the country. |

Germany was divided in West and East Germany. West Germany was very industrious and many workers came from the east to work there. Then in 1963 East Germany were putting up a huge fence. The Iron Curtain. All of the Sudden, West Germany lost a lot of the work force. they had to come up with a foreign worker program. They invided many people from all over to germany. A lot of them from Turkey, Spain, Marocco. |
