It's the 'heart of the city' where both town halls along with some other sights of Munich are located (e.g. the Mariensäule and the Fischbrunnen) and it's also part of the pedestrian zone, so you don't have any cars disturbing you. A lot of regular events take place there which are part of the reason why the Marienplatz is a location brimming with Munich's town live.

Aside from that, I don't think that the Marienplatz's prominence is the same in the rest of Germany as it is in Munich itself. It has a great relevance for the city, granted, but every place like it in any other town does as well. I'm sure the Römerplatz in Frankfurt, the Schlossplatz in Stuttgart or the Alex in Berlin (just to name a few examples) are just as popular in their own towns as the Marienplatz is in Munich - for exactly the same reasons.

Marienplatz is located in the heart of the shopping area of Munich, so many locals come here every day for shopping. Another reason is, that it's a great place to meet before going to a bar or restaurant in that area.

And there's the mayors house and the famous Glockenspiel.

Katzenhai is right, the Marienplatz is well known for people in Munich and some tourists but every city got it's own xxxplatz.
Ask someone in Hamburg about the Marienplatz and he/she don't know what you talking about.

regards
Bernd
