Germans are just not as superficial as Americans no offense intended.
Germans reserve emotions to family and close friends.
You can observe something like it in Japan Japanese don t show their emtions to the entire world as well.

@ Mike I know England is still living in the 19th century in the good old times of British Empire.Unfortunately the rest of the world has moved on to the 21st century. ;)

?

We show affection to our friends, people who are worth our friendship and the beloved ones of course.

To the rest we stay reserved.Yes.
We just don't dance around every stranger with a big smile on our face like small children.
You can keep that in the USA.

I agree with Heinz and he wasn't rude, it's the truth. By the way, it isn't nice of you to say, Germans have no heart, how many germans do you know?

der PINGU
Do you mean men or women or in general? I show affection, but I don't show emotion when I'm around strangers, emotions like sadness (except for funerals of course). It's protection.

Edit: I completely agree with Heinz and Susi.

Danna
Have you been to Germany?

This was the picture that was painted to me of Germans also, until I visited Germany and found out it wasn't true.

Germans are just as friendly as anywhere else, and something I actually really like is the fact that if you inadvertently make eye contact with someone, you are not expected to engage in idle chit chat with them, like we do here in Ireland.

We don't wear our hearts on our tongues (wir tragen das Herz nicht auf der Zunge), but matteroffactly, we can be quite affectionate. It's our style. Only really close friends ever get to know us.

In my opinion, it goes like this:

While Americans cover their feelings under a coat of politeness, Germans do the same under a coat of seriousness and "hard workmanship".

Neither of both is true, but you must understand the cultural background and have x-ray eyes and ears to look through the disguise.

My wife tells me,when ever she is mad, that I have a heart of ice.
I don't. We look at things with logic and act accordingly.

Example: I had to give my little dog away years ago. Every evening for 8 years I went out side and told the dog good night. Then she died and I quit. That was not logic ---- just loyalty to the dog.

Biedronka
Germans (sorry to generalize) have loyalty, which runs a lot deeper than people elsewhere. When you make friends with a German, you have a friend for life.

Juts because they are not trained like dogs to smile on cue, does not mean that they lack feelings.

Germans are very affectionate and loving. They just take time to get to know people. It is a very formal society, even different forms of the word you for personal acquaintances and strangers.

Take time to learn about a society before you attempt to judge it.

Allan D is GAME OVER
They are usually very polite and educated, but most of them are either pretty cold, reserved or shy...
But also they have a great sense of discipline, that's why they usually try to hide their feelings...

But of course ,that depends on the individual...Sometimes you can meet a German guy who is as "open" as a Latino or a Black...

Hi Sasha M,

Forgive my bluntness please but a few people need a little sorting out on this country and culture. Englishman Colonel Harry Flashman visiting Germany in the 1850's before unification gives an interesting point of view on this area though not politically correct by to days standards. I had to edit one word:

1850'S

"The Germans are different altogether. If I was not an Englishman, I would want to be a German. They say what they think, which isn't much as a rule, and they are admirably well ordered. Everyone in Germany knows his place and stays in it, and grovels to those above him, which makes it an excellent country for gentlemen and bullies. In
England, even in my young day, if you took liberties with a working man you would be as likely as not to get a fist in your face, but the lower- class Germans were as docile as (n words) with white skins. The whole country is splendidly disciplined and organized, and with all
their docility the inhabitants are still among the finest soldiers
and workers on earth - as old Bismark has shown. The basis of this is, of course, STUPIDITY, which you must have in people before you
can make them fight or work successfully!"

Cheers,

Michael Kelly
