Why isn't Nov 9th our national holiday? Because that's the day the Berlin wall fell in 1989. But the date also has a nazi background. (Enter the date into Wikipedia and you'll find out.) And why should any nation in the world make a holiday out of "occupation day"? Would you make a lost war a national holiday?
We have October 3rd instead, the day the reunification treaty was signed in 1990. We used to have the 17th of June before. Also, consult Wikipedia to learn why.
And, btw, as I know from history and personal experience, the "denazification" of Germany by the Americans was a joke. The urgently needed personnell to fill the empty spaces in the administration, and they too willingly gave those "old nazis" a second chance. Maybe that's what you have to do in a war-ridden area, and democratizing a people that had been used to dictatorship for generations is not an easy thing to do. In my opinion, Germany only got democratized by the 1968 protest movement, but we're sort of on a way back. And the US are, too. Take care of your democracy. Once they've taken it away, it will be a long way back.
