Would 1,490,721.67 DEM be enough for a 16 year old to live comfortably for the rest of their life in Germany? |
If I have 1,490,721.67 DEM, would that be enough money for me to live in Germany for the rest of my life comfortably in a house or apartment with a roommate or friend and be able to live a nice life?
Is 1,490,721.67 DEM a lot of money in Germany? |

Well, just in case you lived on the rear side of the moon or elsewhere in the orbit - Germany doesn't have the good old German Mark any longer.
We had to change the currency by 1st January 2002 into that bloody Euro.
And if you really still have almost one and a half million of Deutsche Mark you won't be able to live of it. Not even if you changed it into Euros. Because that would be only around 764 472 Euros - just about enough to buy some ground and built a small house on it - and then your money would be used up.
Think you told us a tall story here - so stop dreaming about it. You're too young anyway.
Think you'd better finish school, get a job which brings in money and wait until you've reached maturity. |

I could live comfortable on 765,193 Euros . . .
At 4,9%, you have about 37,500 per year.
3125 per month
28% for house which would be 896 euros per month
At 6% more or less for a house or apartment, you could afford to spend about 175,000 euros on a place.
3125
-896 rent/buy home
-225 heating/water
-400 food (you could eat at a imbiss or something everyday
with a salad and drink and have a cup of coffee
and pastry at one of the german backeries)
-640 taxes guessing here
- 65 public transportation per month
-200 health insurance you can probably do better
-300 reinvest for future
+/- 400 left for recreation/etc . . .
If you buy a car and get a license (2000 euros), owning a car could easily cut another 300 euros into your budget, but if you decide to bike it and used public transportation which is excellent here, you could go without a car. You don't necessarily have to go to work. If you want to live comfortably and do vacations, I would not get a car and use the train with bayern ticket for example or other reduced rates and last minute deals.
Depends on what you mean by comfortably and where in Germany . . . like the USA, some parts of Germany real estate is pretty cheap. I live in Augsburg area and a house is about 250,000 euros on the average. I own a house and bought a studio this year with kitchen for 30,000 euros in the city. Right now, interest rates are really low, but like the person said above you have to be 18 to be of age. Why don't you put the money in the bank and earn some interest for the next two years which you be around 60,000, with that you can easily buy a one to two bedroom nice apartment.
Places to live . . . It is a little more higher priced, but Heidelberg is beautiful. You don't need a car. University town and US military european central command is also located there. You can easily get around Heidelberg speaking english. I would recommend that you learn german and take intensive courses if you live here in Germany. It makes it more fun to be able to speak german with the germans. |

No, for all your lifetime it is not enough. Have in mind the inflation. And if you are a non-EU citizen you must have a visa. If you don`t have a high-end job then you only can get an investment visa that will cost you 500 000 EUR per capita. Ok, you can live from the earnings if you have some. That is for you and your boy friend about 2 000 000 DEM.
But you must be 18 at least. |

Well, Deutsch Mark is no longer used as currency in Germany, as most of Europe, the Euro is the currency now, so you'll have to half that amount: EUR 745 360
How long it will last you depends on your standard of living and where you live, big cities obviously are more expensive most of the time, most likely there will be inflation at some point so money will lose value as well, or rents may go up. If you are planning to buy something, which I don't think you can unless you are 18, that would bring you down to at least EUR 645 360.
If you spend about EUR100 each week for the next 60 years, though of course I hope you live a long healthy life, that would be about EUR 288 000, EDIT, oops, misread decimal point, ok so that would leave you with EUR 357 360, which is a lot of money but I doubt you will be able to live like that, groceries can be expensive and you'll have bills and stuff to pay. It is obviously a lot of money but speaking from experience, people tend to underestimate how much things may cost and potential expenditures. I'd think if I did nothing (no job/degree) I would probably be bored and spent more money so it wouldn't last as long as it should! |

Perhaps you could live with that money about 12 years really comfortable or the double if you reduce your spending effectively by 50%. However, that would be an amount, which is bigger than the average family income in Germany of today. If you would like to live really simple and economic, the money of about 750.000 Euro may be enough for 75 years.
But that money ist not much. Perhaps you could buy a small cottage or a nice car like Maybach. |

no...your average 3 bedroom house with a lot will cost about 400,000 euros....factor in a nice car, bills, no job, shopping...and 7 euros a gallon of fuel, It will go fast so no not for the rest of your life but its a good start in life as long as you have a degree and can work....Dont move here to live...go to america or somewhere. Tax is too high and too costly (you can always visit) Germany is only getting more and more expensive week by week but the pay for workers are not increasing. Er's are bringing in more and more foreigners to work for about 4 euros an hour on a 3 month rotation.
