Hannover was very destroyed in WW II and is not as nice as Lübeck. It is the capital of the state of Niedersachsen has apr. 500.000 inhabitants and is easy to get around by public transportation.
Here is the website: http://www.hannover.de/ (if you go to languages you can switch to English)

Lübeck is a very charming, old city, part of the Hanse (as well as Hamburg and Bremen). The Hanse is an old trading community. You will find old buildings, it is close to the Baltic Sea.
Here is the website: http://www.luebeck.de/ (it is only German but you can at least get an impression if you do not speak German)

Have fun over there.

cause Hannover is my hometown, u should visit it! The most beautiful place in Hannover really is the Zoo! Its unique in Europe because of its american style like animal Kingdom in Orlando,Fl. The animals are presented in a kind of natural habitat and there are shows and events! A must is a visit of the ancient towncentre with the marktkirche, the 800 years old capitol church and the old Townhall from the 14th century. U will have a fantastic view all over the city from the new Townhall, entering with a askew running elevator. a crazy experience...
Wandering around the Maschsee, a huge menmade lake near the innercity is very relaxing.
And the last "must see" are the Herrenhauser Garten"! They are huge french style baroque Gardens from the Hannover Kings in the 18th cent.. is has the original features and figures and it is the most famous and best conserved all over Germany
But of course, Lübeck is a nice city too, but I´m an local patriot ;-)

Greetings from Germany

Lubeck that if you like old castles, and historic building you love Lubeck.

Of the 2 cities , I`d pick Luebeck, if I was you.
Hannover is too large to see everything , whereas Luebeck still has a sort of "village charme" about it and everything seems to be within walking distance.
