"Schweinsteiger" means "PigRiser"?

like the Bayern player Bastian Schweinsteiger, i was curious about what the name meant and my mom said it translates to "Pig Riser".

What is a Pig Riser? what is the cultural significance in Germany??

I'm Bavarian, and in our local dialect a "Steige" is a cage, or a fenced area. A Schweinsteige is a pig cage. So Schweinsteiger's ancestors probably were raising pigs, which is not uncommon in Bavaria even nowadays. You only missed one letter: The name doesn't mean "pig riser" but "pig raiser".

you are all wrong. sorry dudes ! The name Schweinsteiger is not that common in Germany. There are only roundabout 50 families with this name and they are all rooted back to Rosenheim area. There you find also a town called Schweinsteig http://www.traveljournals.net/explore/germany/map/m2570278/schweinsteig.html

In Bavaria earlier town were called "steig" due to the fact you had to go upstairs (=steig) to get into it. And Schwein is the name of an animal which indicates that there were a lot of farmers.

It's 50/50 situation.

If you consider "-steiger" as a part of verb "steigen" then you're right (complex word, that consisto of noun (Schwein) and verb (steigen)
But it can also be considered as a part of noun "Steig" which is "seep path". (noun + noun) and in this case the meaning is different.

I like better the noun+noun variant

Actually it translates as pig raiser, or pig increaser.
The ancestral family may have raised pigs.
