Well,

when the British decided to use the tactic of divide and rule, they divided the then largest state - Bengal into west bengal and east bengal. then, when India finaly won her independence, the east bengal state went on to become the country of bangladesh. west bengal remained a part of India. (notice that its is on the eastern side of the country...~_~ and bangladesh is to the east of it)

this was the history arnd West Bengal in the simplest form i could put it!:)

15 crore Bangladeshi.All the people of Bangladesh always
remember the contribution of India as well as the Bengali
people of West Bengal during Liberation of Bangladesh
in 1971.During British period Bangladesh was called East
Bengal.After 1947 to 1971 (up to 24Th.March) Bangladesh was
called East Pakistan. Now it is Bangladesh.The Father of
the Nation is Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

well prior to 1905 there used to be one single state of bengali speaking people(and others as well) by the name of bengal.

but the british (who ruled india at that time) partitioned bengal on the pretext of ease in administration(though the real reason is said to be the policy of divide and rule)

and the two resultant states were known by the name of west and east bengal.

after independence in 1947 east bengal owing to a majority of muslim population went to pakistan.

however due to the opprression of pakistani people it freed itself from pakistani rule(with help from india) and therefore the country bangladesh came into existence.

for historical reasons the name west bengal was never changed

first Bangladesh was in India only . but after the British came our forefathers fought and India became Pakistan,Hindustan Bangladesh.then west Bengal was distributed in 2 parts i.e west Bengal and east Bengal which is Bangladesh.people who come from Bangladesh to w.b are called as east Bengal's people ;like the football team of e.b.
