About Bandipur National Park?

Show all answers

jayaraman
Bandipur National Park is one of India's best known sanctuaries, and is an important Project Tiger reserve. It is located in the Chamarajanagar district of southern Karnataka in south India, and is contiguous with the Mudumalai National Park in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu, the Wynad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala, and the Nagarhole National Park to the northwest. It is home to around seventy tigers and over three thousand Asian elephants (as per the 1997 census), along with leopards, dholes, gaur and sloth bears. Bandipur is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

History
A sanctuary of 90 km² was created at this site in the Bandipur Reserve Forest in 1931. As it was realised that this was too small for effective wildlife conservation, leading to the instituting of the Venugopala Wildlife Park at this site, extending over 800 km². The Bandipur Tiger Reserve was constituted in 1973 by carving out 880 km² from the Wildlife Park. Recognised under Project Tiger in 1973 this park has boasted constant rise in Tiger population. Also famous for Sandalwood trees and rare species of Flora.-

Bandipur National Park lies on the halfway down to the Mysore-Ooty highway. India's best-known wildlife reserves - Bandipur National Park is situated within Chamarajanagar district in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, and joins the south Indian states of Tamil Nadu & Kerala.

Blessed with a temperate climate and diverse geographical features, the park supports an outstanding variety of flora and fauna, making it an authentic paradise for wildlife

The scrubby jungles towards the eastern limits of the Bandipur National Park consist of stunted trees, intermixed with bushes and open grassy belts. Towards the northwestern fringes, there is a bit-by-bit shift in the vegetation, from open dry deciduous jungles to tropical mixed deciduous jungles. These diverse habitats of vegetation shelters an enormous diversity of animal life.

With the arrival of pre-monsoon showers in April, Bandipur National Park begins to blossom in all its beauty. The native birds starts their breeding activities. The grasslands with sprouting grass are dominated by elephants and the majestic gaur. Bandipur is a paradise between April to October, for the tourist coming to watch the larger mammals in their natural habitats. During the summer season, when dryness exists over most parts of Bandipur, the backwaters of the Kabini Reservoir in the northwestern part of the park entertains huge gathering of large mammals, especially the elephant and the gaur. This rare character of Bandipur National Park makes a breathtaking view, and is almost the only one of its kind in Asia.

Once the private game reserve of the Mysore maharajas, Bandipur, the large forest (866 sq km) south of the river Kabini is now part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and one of WWF’s Project Tiger sites. It neighbours the Nagarhole National Park, the Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu and Wynaad in Kerala. All together this area makes for the largest protected forest in India. Bandipur has a sizeable population of wildlife - elephant, spotted deer and sambar, gaur and flying squirrel, four horned antelope, Nilgiri langur and sloth bear. Amongst the reserve’s most prominent animals are its 1,900-odd elephants.
The Royal Bengal tiger (75 in the Park) and leopard are even more elusive here than elsewhere because the moister region that they inhabit falls under the protected core area where casual visitors are not allowed. Mostly dry deciduous forest with an abundance of teak on the periphery, the moister core area of Bandipur, has large tracts of fragrant sandalwood and rosewood. However, some summers this area too gets unbearably dry and during these times the animals migrate to the neighbouring wetter Mudumalai Park.
