1. Drink only mineral water.
2. For about 4 - 5 days eat lots of fruit of (that) the country.
3. Eat meat after you know its pretty safe. You will be able to tell.
4. Do not eat or buy junk food from the streets.
BON VOYAGE

Maybe go to your doctors before you go and get various Jabs apart from that you should just make sure your healthy and maybe have Multivits :D.... And stay away from dodgey food / non drinkable water

Go to the doctor in your town and ask him for certain shots and special medication form the trip. Go for a checkup also.

No real way to avoid it. It is natural for people to get sick when eating food in another country and culture. Indians often get sick coming to the US too.

A few pointers:
1) Eat at nice restaurants. See if it looks clean. If you see a place that has lots of people in it, it is probably safe. Indians don't want to get sick any more than you do.
2) Only drink filtered or bottled water. Most Indians think filtered water is safer. Check the seal on bottled water. Be careful about waiters that come around to fill up your water glass. Make sure you ask if the water is filtered.
3) Rice and dahl are always good bets for settling your stomach
4) Only eat stuff that has been cooked or peeled. No salads except at high-end restaurants. I always think the fresh fruit stands are a good bet. You can watch them cut/open/peel the fruit on the spot.
5) Tea is usually safe because it has been boiled.
6) Bring psyllium husk capsules with you to supplement your diet. Unless you have a long bus ride or something, it is better for you than immodium, etc.
7) Don't stress out about it so much that you don't enjoy your trip.

hmm... you got some pretty nasty answers there :)
and i must say some good ones too!

One thing i would like to tell you is, everybody tells you to take only bottled water, but that is not the safest water in India, there have been various cases where the bottled water was also contaminated and do not trust the seal :)

The best is to drink boiled water. If you're staying in a hotel insist on boiled water, explicitly tell them to boil it for more than 15 mins :) and carry ur own water bottles when going out.
Do not eat/drink on roadside food carts.
Eat only in clean restaurents, you will know one when u enter it :)
Do not eat salads, if not cleaned properly they can surely make you sick.
Tea is safe as the water in it is boiled.
Buy fruit and eat after washing them on your own.

mostly people get sick due to food,
but there are a lot of other illnesses there and people in India have got vaccines for them which are not common abroad. So consult ur doctor and take any vaccination if required.

Heat and humidity can also make one sick if they are used to mosylt cold weather. Wear cotton clothes, very light/loose and comfortable ones.

what else??... i'll edit if i think of something else :)

1.Don't drink tap water, drink only sealed or boiled water.Always buy a good brand water bottle with or carry boiled water with you.
2.Don't eat the tempting street food.
3.Don't have food in any small/roadside restaurants.
4.Don't eat too much spicy food and ask the waiter to make everything less spicy.
5.Don't eat too much,because it's tasty.

amna a
bring ur own food :D

Cat
Make sure you get all your shots before going overseas and don't drink the water or eat any meat while your there.

chuuey
dont drink the water, and prepare your own food lol

That is a good question. My husband recently went on business and got really sick when he got back. He got the shots, drank only bottled water, but he still managed to get sick. He did eat out while he was there, so that could be the reason.

MentalFrog
Don't go.
