If budget doesn't permit, then See Breez, Starling Resort... many more hotels near Bus Stand....ok type.
If you are willing to enjoy life in a shacks, then go to Luna Magica.......they have couple of rooms fitted with AC, just on the beach....you get excellent sea-food in Luna Magica...it was my all time favorite sea food joint in South.
Luna Magica...you need to find it out inside the Fishermens colony, end of the lane where the all women police station is there.

There are plenty of hotels depending on your budget. Try to reach Mahabalipuram before sunset and choose a hotel of ur liking. Ofcourse, there will be rush during weekends.
