Its not possible neither it should be right to judge any one place as best place in India. Also it depends on what you like to see. I am giving my choice -
Hill station - Kausani near Simla and Darjeeling in West Bengal
Sea beach - Kovalam in Kerala
Forest - Silent Vally in Kerala, Sunderban in West Bengal and Betla in Jharkhand
Ancient Fort - Golconda fort in Hyderabad
Man made building - Tajmahal
Vally - Netarhat in Jharkhand
Sunrise - Darjeeling
Sunset - Netarhat
Pure untouched nature - Araku Vally in Andhrapradesh
Planned city - Chandigarh
Farming - villages in Punjab
Storming sea - Kanyakumari - you can feel its at the tip of India
Lake - Chihlka in Orissa
There are many more best places, which is difficult to capture in this small place. |

Ignore everyone who says any of the cities or the Taj Mahal!!Agra (the town near the Taj) is a pretty unpleasant place, as are the cities of Delhi and Mumbai. Mumbai is pretty westernised in places, but the slum on the way to the airport was worse than any I saw in Varanasi or Delhi.
As for the "best" places to: Goa's nice, the hill-stations towards the north are also lovely, as is Kerala and the southern tip towards Chennai. These are only the ones I'm willing to share because they're already well known though of course!!
As lots of people have already said though...there is no right answer. You should also be prepared for the massive difference in living standards. Some people are (stupidly) shocked by this and think less of the country as a result. In my mind India is a pretty amazing place...beautiful and CHEAP! I'm going there (again) for 5 months in October. |

India is a wonderful country to visit, the people are some of the friendliest in the world. It's a bit big to have a "best place," really, isn't it? |

India is a big country and you got no such place as best place, you will have to make place's your best on your very own.
I come from goa and I live very close to the beach near the leela palace.goa is a very touriste state, you will find indians all out there during this time of the year.
have a guide book and look it up and go to them and see if you like it or not.
only you can make it happen for yourself.
what you see is what you get in india.
good luck honey. |

Goa. Its westernised. The rest of the place is giant toilet. Kid you not. To kiill the monotony, I counted 155 people taking a dump by the railway line between Mumbai and Delhi. Is this a record? Its more than you see on the Glasgow-Edinburgh line anyway. |

It depends on what you want to get out of your trip, cities like Delhi etc will show you the real india, beautiful rich colonial areas, wonderful hotels and restaurants and also the poorer areas and begging children. The Taj Mahal is worth a visit but is not enough to base a holiday on. Like all places abroad where there are lots of tourists you will find pick pockets and people harrasing you to buy stuff or beg money just be prepared. The south of India is a total contrast still bustling and busy in the towns and cities but the beaches and waterways in places like goa and kerala are stunning. very laid back but also watch out for the drug culture that can be an eye opener. play it safe it's a very different country than you may picture. |

Goa! But, as someone said, go as prepared as you can be as most people on their way from the airport to their hotel think they have made a big mistake! A day or two later they love it and then return year after year, many staying long periods of time. Read the thread below to see what you should and shouldn't do |

Delhi is not great although it does have loads of historic stuff worth a look i.e the Red fort, Jantar Mantar, Lotus Temple, Gandhi's Grave. I could go on.
Agra is a must for the Tal Mahal and other tombs like Humayan's tomb. Varanasi is good for the erotic temples
Don't forget Ramthambore for the Tigers.
India is a massive culture shock for any Western person that goes there. The poverty will be the worst you have ever seen (I have visited many 3rd world countries so I know). It is also distressing and stressful dealing with the beggers/amputees etc that see a white face as a bottomless pit of money. Ther sheer volume of people is also very overwhelming.
Most people fly into India and want to leave straight away, give it a few days it does get easier but it is not for the fainted hearted. I have travelled to 27 countries and India is the only one that reduced me to tears due to the sheer stress. I managed to stay 2 weeks, my original plans were for 6. |

India is hard work, I have been five times, the climate, the mosquitos, the beggers and poverty and the harasment from shop keepers can be overwhelming, but the place is amazing! Goa holds a special place in my heart but I also love Delhi. The people are amazing, so friendly and helpful. Go you will hate it for the first few days and then you will fall in love with the place. Trust me....I keep on going back. |
