As long as you just need to know important cities and places on your long distance drive, their maps would show. The map would not be very good in resolution.
If you wish to use very minute details, the site expects you to pay once and get the entire CD which is worth its cost.

Free maps are of no use as their resolutions are poor. If you ned one for driving better invest some money and buy some physical maps rather than downloaded ones.
