Backpacking in India? |
Planning on flying into Delhi, working my way round the country then flying out of delhi again and on to Vietnam or Bejjing.
My question is ; is it safe to backpack round India, are parts safer than otehrs, what is the transportation like, are there hostels - and how much on average do they cost.
Also if you know anything about Pakistan same questions really!
Thank you |

India, Vietnam, China etc are all countries my son and his g/friend visited on their travels, they have a very good web site which goes through planning your route, what to take, and lots of useful information as well as photos etc. It also covers customs that should be observed and safety tips as well as a diary of the journey, please take a look at the site by way of your preparation and I hope you enjoy it as much as they did!

You don't say how long you are going for or where you want to visit. You won't be able to see the whole country - I've been going for years (months at a time) and have still only seen a fraction.
Answers to your questions though - yes it is safe to backpack in India. Get yourself the latest Lonely Planet as unsafe areas change year on year. In general I would say it is safer than Europe. Trains are extremely cheap and the network is extensive so you can get to just about anywhere but they are SLOW. Always book in advance at the Railway Staion toursit office. It is a bureaucratic system but seems to work. I always travel plain sleeper class as I hate air conditioning but it can get crowded. Also check out internal flights. There are lots of cheap airlines now and a couple of flights on the longer stretches of journey will cut days out of your travel time.
Budget accommodation in India is usually called a guesthouse. Again the LP will have a list of the best and most popular in the area. A double room with bathroom costs around 250 rupees (£3) but a single with shared facilities should be more like £2.
Don't know about Pakistan but I do know that you have to check out border crossing times otherwise you could be stuck overnight.
Have a great time! |
