go to kashmir to start with stay for two days in Gulmarg(u can take ride on highest cable car and visit a glacier in the middle of summers) & two days in Pahlagam(base station for Amarnath yatra "MY Favourite) ,you can also opt for staying in Srinagar for a day or two to boat in famous dal lake.

if u like rough mountains,breathtaking scenary,frendly ppl...com 2 uttaranchal......goa is definitaly d place if u want a gr8 nitelife n watersports.......dere r gr8 markets dere(INGO market is really awesome..its in d nite and has live bands,djs n stuff)

to understand India, it is simple impossible to get everything known at one place only! u can say, India is a multicultural pot of different languages, people and traditions and cultures.. coz in different places u will get different but fabulous food, their clothing is so different from other places... so to really understand wht India is, i think visiting many places , u will get to know that very well! all the best.. below i have mentioned some places, just go thru.. and see.. :-)

well, being an Indian , i would say there isn't one to mention really. there are many-
northern-Darjeeling, Shimla, Kullu, Manali, Jammu & Kashmir, Dehradun..
north eastern-Sikkim
western- Rajasthan, Gujarat (surat , baroda)..
a little bit central- Bhopal, Agra(Taj Mahal), Lucknow, Kanpur, varanasi (Kashi Vishwanath temple- its famous in varanasi)
southern(especially for temples!!-place for worshipping by Hindus )- karnataka, kerala, tamil nadu(deer etc).. temple names like mahabalipuram temple, etc..
soith western- Goa(its simple superb)- Dadra, Silvasa, Mumbai coatsts..(they r fabulous)- Bandra, andheri , khandala,.

and if u like- u can go to any place in this world!! u knw, travelling is real enjoyment, i understand! full of fun and adventure, u know!!!
so all the above ones were suggestions- u decide only according to ur likings and accomodations, ok.
it also actually depends on which part u wana visit / go to. so , in a brief way- i hav mentioned very famous ones to u.. from around whole of India..
