Bombay was earlier under Portuguese control. The word Bombay, in Portuguese means Good {Bom} Bay{Bay}, due to the fact it has the best known natural safe berthing spots for sea-faring vessels/ships - a perfect natural harbour.
However, the local residents associate the city's name with a guardian diety of the land called Mumbadevi. And thus it got its name-changeover as "Mumbai". In the other principal language of the land, viz., Hindi, its called as "Bumbai"(pronounced Bum-Ba eee)
