There are three things where there is absolutely no need to worry about when in India:
(1) loneliness
(2) medical supplies
(3) ATMs
Take your plastic, and just 100-200 USD as a reverse, and you will be fine. ATMs are plenty and all over the place, not just in metros but also in small towns. Visa, Visa Electron, MasterCard and Maestro cards are accepted at absolutely any ATM. Still you will find ATMs for pretty much any other card under the sun, my friend had a boutique local chinese card which worked in an HSBC ATM. Worst case, there are also plenty of Western Union points in case your plastic should break, be taken by the machine or stolen.
You are not allowered to bring rupees into India, as they want to get foreign currencies into India. Noone deals with rupees outside India anyway. |

Daily paper is 10 or less, coffee 10,meal 40-60 in local cafes,up to 400 for posh restuarents, really top hotel 3000-4000 per night, local cheap hotel 200-500 a night, some even less.......loads of places for less than 1000....100-mile train journey 400 or less,2nd class..........I spent less than £400 on expenses for a month in Kerala,Madras, and Kaniyakoomery, right down on the southern tip....Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekenanda have their monuments there, well worth a visit if you're in the south.Beautiful monuments, and glorious beach, gorgeous flowers and colourful market, absolute joy being there...hotel cost 150 a night (no mistake....£2 ) for a local-style 'cheapy',,,,the posh 'western' place was full, but had a good restuarent and 'permit room'...their name for a bar...cool and comfortable, friendly, and very pleasant. ATM's were no problem in Madras and Thiruvananmthapuram, (capital of Kerala) or make arrangements for local withdrawals with your bank......................For large numbers, million isn't used...the 'big number' is a Lakh, which is 100,000,so a million is described as 'Ten Lakh'. One of the travelling 'funnies',considering the meaning of 'lack' in English....had a lovely time, made lots of local friends, even invited home to tea with the warden at Mahatma Gandhi's monument...pleasant shady little bungalow, lovely family....what it's all about...meeting people, not just seeing the sights. Beautiful.................................. a good local read, see 'The God of Small Things' by Arandati Roy....lovely story, amusing, but with some tragedies, about village/small town life in Kerala, which got the Booker Prize for her.....a joy to read. |

Hi, you cannot buy rupees outside of india, you either take some cash or travellers cheques, the atms work fine, but don't forget to let your bank know where and when you are going and for how long, otherwise your card wont work until you have called them. |
