You can fly on an Indian airline. Jet and Kingfisher are two very good airlines with fantastic service.

Jet flies Chennai > Mumbai > Goa several times a day:

There is a weekly train to Goa , 7311 Chennai Vasco Express. This train leaves Chennai at 2 pm on Fridays. August 26 is Sunday. So take 7313 Chennai Hubli Express on Sunday , August 26 and reach Hubli at 6.15 am next morning. From Hubli you get 2847 express at 9.30 am to take you to Madgaon in Goa at 1. 45 pm.

Not happy with the above. Travel on Friday 24th August as suggested earlier and be at Madgaon at 11-40am next day.

Or take the morning Shatabdi Express from Chennai Central for Bangalore. Reach Bangalore at 11 am and catch 7309 express for Madgaon at 3.15 pm. This is for Sunday August 26. The train arrives at Madgaon at 5.15 am. Or continue to Vasco where it reaches at 6.00 am. You can also take Air Deccan flight from Bangalore to Goa. Present rate is around Rs. 1049. This is a bargain.

If you like train travel, both my train options are good. And by the way advance reservation is possible now 90 days in advance and not 60 days as mentioned in some replies. Online booking can be done at www.irctc.co.in and you can print e-tickets as well.

Take a spice jet flight itz more cheaper than train.
Train will cost you about 2000-3000
and if you make spicejet reservation now it will cost you about 2000Rs.

Are you saying that there are no trains or that you don't want to use one? Your question is not very clear.

www.seat61.com is very good for checking out possible rail connections.

As for alternatives, what are you looking for? All of southern India is fascinating. Closer to Goa, Hampi is worth a visit, so are the caves at Ajanta (nr Aurangabad). Mumbai is also very interesting.

If you go to Hampi and take the overnight sleeper bus to Goa, make sure you get a lower berth bunk.

You will be able to get train tickets through advance bookings 60 days in advance to your date of journey, to any destination within India. visit indianrailways.gov.in for details.

For 1st August tickets will be available from 1st June 2007. Still you have lot of time to decide.

Any way you can also travel Chennai-Bangalore (By bus or train). Bangalore-Goa by State Transport/private buses.
